Sarah Carr Speaks Out on Budget and Cider Duty Rise

2.44.00pm GMT Fri 26th Mar 2010

Sarah Carr, Liberal Democrat Prospective MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire is backing the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) stance on the Chancellor's announcement in his Budget that duty on cider will increase by 10 per cent above inflation.

Commenting Sarah Carr said,

"I am worried about how the duty changes will affect the many cider producers in Herefordshire. We already have some of the highest duty rates on Cider in Europe. This is a real blow to the county's producers big and small. The Chancellor doesn't seem to realize cider production costs are greater than that for beer and the potentially serious impact of his proposals on our economy here in Herefordshire.

"Overall the Budget did nothing to make Britain a fairer society. A Liberal Democrat Budget with Vince Cable as Chancellor would have lifted millions of people out of income tax altogether. The LibDems would raise the threshold at which people start paying income tax from current levels to £10,000, cutting the average working age person's income tax bill by £700 and meaning that 3.6m will no longer have to pay any income tax at all."
