Campaign success as Stonebow Unit Gardens planning application withdrawn -Sarah Carr

4.25.33pm GMT Mon 15th Feb 2010

Sarah Carr, Prospective Liberal Democrat MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire, has welcomed news that a planning application to build over more than a third of the important gardens of the Stonebow Mental Health Unit at Hereford's County Hospital has now been withdrawn.

Mrs Carr successfully worked to represent the views of patients, staff and friends of the Stonebow Unit in objecting to the building plans. In addition to speaking at many public meetings and meeting with representatives of NHS Herefordshire, Sarah wrote a formal objection to the planning application based on environmental, parking and traffic considerations as well as the well-being of the patients of the Stonebow Unit with the loss of an important therapeutic amenity and loss of privacy.

Sarah said,

"I am absolutely delighted that the planning application to build on the Stonebow Unit gardens has been withdrawn. The application caused a lot of stress for a group of people who are so often marginalised. This news will be a great relief to patients, clinicians, and family and community members."

Sarah received a formal letter from Herefordshire Council dated 9th February, confirming that permission for the planning application has been withdrawn.
