Sarah Carr, Hereford and South Herefordshire's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, has voiced her support for sheep farmers across the county and nationwide.
Sarah Carr is supporting the work of Tim Farron, MP - the Lib Dem Defra Secretary, to reduce the impact of the E.U's sheep tagging rules. Commenting, Sarah Carr said that "the concessions the government have obtained are inadequate".
"Further efforts must be made by the government to guarantee more exemptions to the costly EID regulations or even to resist the system entirely due to its unreliability. With the fact that the EID equipment is only 90% effective, Sarah believes that the system, aimed at improving traceability, has been rendered pointless and there is little need for sheep to be tagged electronically until it leaves its place of birth.
"Current concessions mean that farmers will save £7-18 million each year from original estimates by not having to buy their own tag readers, however it is likely that the cost could still reach £65million.
Sarah Carr continues, "A system like EID should not be forced upon the nations struggling farmers, especially considering the great cost the scheme would be to the industry. It is overly burdensome and another example of needless bureaucratic meddling in the farming industry."
