Sarah Carr, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Hereford and South Herefordshire, today (28th July) gave the key note speech at a conference held at the Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford for care and nursing home nurses and managers in the county. Sarah's speech outlined the key challenges faced by care and nursing homes and the government in reforming the care system.
Sarah said,
"I absolutely support the importance of giving carers and care workers much more respect and the dignity that they deserve. I pay tribute to the work of all carers in very difficult circumstances."
In her speech, Sarah spoke about the need for a continuous mix of qualified and specifically trained staff to deliver good quality care in care homes. Sarah said,
"People want the best for their loved ones… Knowing that staff members have the best training and that their chosen care home offers the right mix of skills and experience to look after their relative is vital."
Sarah also spoke about the government's green paper 'Shaping the future of care together' published last week and the key challenge of the rise in the increase of dementia including ultimately finding a cure for the devastating condition. Sarah also raised her support for the Age Concern led campaign to raise the weekly personal allowance for older people in care homes from £21 a week to £40. Sarah said,
"I think it is appalling that nearly a quarter of a million older people in care homes are struggling to pay for basics like clothes, toiletries and a haircut."
Sarah closed her speech thanking carers for the vital work they do caring for some of the most vulnerable people.
