Sarah Carr Calls on Government to Expand Free Pre-School Childcare
9.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 12th Jun 2009
Sarah Carr, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Hereford and South Herefordshire is backing National Childcare week (6-12 June).
Sarah is using the opportunity to call on the Government to expand free pre-school childcare which would benefit thousands of working parents across Herefordshire. National Childcare Week celebrates the benefits of high-quality affordable childcare enabling parents to work or train whilst benefiting children's learning and improving their confidence.
Sarah Carr said, "Like many parents I balance a busy life. I know the importance of high-quality affordable childcare which liberates parents and provides lots of fun, friendships and learning for the little ones. I also want to recognise the importance of pre-schools, nurseries, playgroups and childminders in our communities.
"I would like the Government to provide more support to families by expanding free pre-school childcare to 20 hours a week for all children from 18 months.
"I also have concerns that the Government take a too bureaucratic approach to pre-school care which is causing a large number childminders to turn away from the profession. We already have the farcical situation where some parents find they are better off giving up work rather than forking out for expensive childcare.
"Ministers must look again at the current system and find the right balance for everyone's benefit."
