Thousands of people in Herefordshire will be taken out of income tax altogether by radical tax proposals launched by the Liberal Democrats. And thousands more will see their income tax bill slashed by £700 a year.

The plans were launched by Liberal Democrat Party Leader Nick Clegg on Monday 20th April, who said that the proposals would boost family budgets that are already overstretched by the rising cost of living. The plans call for the personal tax allowance to be raised to £10,000. Nick Clegg had hinted at the radical proposals about to be announced during a visit to Hereford on the 17th April when he met with local business and community leaders.

Sarah Carr, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Hereford & South Herefordshire said, "Thousands of Herefordshire families on middle to low incomes will see real benefits from this tax cut.

"People earning over £10,000 will pay up to £700 less income tax a year, paid for by closing the loopholes exploited by big corporations and the extremely wealthy.

"Many ordinary Herefordshire residents are struggling to make ends meet because of the recession. This is precisely the right time to make far reaching and permanent changes to the tax system that benefits the majority of people on middle and low incomes. Liberal Democrats want to see more money in the pockets of ordinary people rather than in the careless hands of the Government.

"Here in Herefordshire, the Liberal Democrats will be going into the general election committed to a lasting income tax cut."
