Hereford Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson Sarah Carr has welcomed the party's "superb" performance in the Aylestone by-election on Thursday 19th February.

The election was called following the resignation of Aylestone Conservative Councillor Nick Vaughan from Hereford City Council. The winner with a large majority was Liberal Democrat Alan Williams. Mr Williams, a local businessman and former Mayor of Hereford, received 52% of the vote. Independent candidate Trevor Clarke came second and Labour candidate Bob Clay trailed in third. The Conservatives did not field a candidate in the election to Hereford City Council.

Congratulating Alan on the night, Sarah Carr said:

"I am delighted that Alan Williams has been elected to Hereford City Council representing Aylestone Ward. Alan is a local campaigner who cares deeply about our City and I know he will work hard for the residents of Aylestone."

Alan Williams was first elected to Hereford City Council in 1992 and raised over £35,000 for St Michael's Hospice during his Mayoral year. Speaking after the result was announced, Alan thanked everyone who gave their support to his campaign and promised that he would always be available to help residents of Aylestone.
