Local Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Sarah Carr took part in a Herefordshire Youth Conference 'Question Time' debate at Hereford Sixth Form College on Friday 31st October. The Conference was organised by Herefordshire Youth Council, in partnership with the Shadow Board and Youth Funding Panel.
The main topic of the day was an Anti-Bullying Charter which has been created by the Youth Council in Partnership with Herefordshire Council. Sarah and fellow panellists motivational speaker 'Scary Guy', Leader of the Council Conservative Councillor Roger Phillips, Independent Councillor Sally Robertson and Heads of Service from Herefordshire Council also answered questions from the audience about bullying, the role of the media, affordable housing in Herefordshire and how to get more young people involved in politics.
Afterwards Sarah said:
"All too often young people are stereotyped as hoodie wearing binge drinkers when in fact the vast majority of young people care deeply about their community, their family and friends.
"Debt, bullying and crime are real issues that are worrying young people today and these are issues that must be worked on. Bullying can happen to anyone at any age. But no one has the right to hurt another person, make them feel bad or stop them going to school - if a person is being bullied they should talk to someone they trust about it.
"Getting into debt is a massive concern for young people especially when the economy is taking a battering. It is appalling that young people are being saddled with mortgage style debts if they get the opportunity to go to University today. It is also a dreadful state of affairs that since 1998 one third of graduates still do not earn enough money (more than £15,000) to start paying back their student debts."
