Commenting on the news that Conservative led Herefordshire Council are giving notices to quit to a number of tenant farmers from across Herefordshire, Sarah Carr, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Hereford and South Herefordshire said,
"This closure culture must stop. First it was closing schools, then the Conservative run council risk the future of our local Post Offices by taking the Council's postal services contract off The Royal Mail and gives it to a private multi-national company and now they are attacking the very heart of Herefordshire by attempting to kick out tenant farmers. I am seriously concerned that the Conservatives running Herefordshire Council do not understand the terrible consequences of their decisions."
"On Thursday 15th May I attended a meeting with farmers from across Herefordshire where I heard first hand the crisis facing many as a result of this latest decision. I urge the Conservative Cabinet member responsible to reconsider the decision he has taken to close many County Farms and to consider first the long-term future of the people of Herefordshire especially at this time of increasing global food shortages and escalating food prices.
"I wholeheartedly support the plea of the Tenant Farmers Association for Herefordshire Council to think again and instead consult on a proper asset management plan for the County Farms Estate. Farming is integral to Herefordshire's way of life - those with power should be encouraging people to stay in farming and not kick them out."
