Sarah Carr - fighting for a better deal for Hereford and South Herefordshire
|
Sarah Carr, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Hereford and South Herefordshire has fought for increased investment in the Herefordshire tourism industry in a speech in the main conference hall at the national Liberal Democrat annual conference taking place in Brighton this week. In a speech to delegates from across the UK Sarah Carr said,
"Herefordshire, where I live, is one of the most tranquil places to live in the UK. Local tourism currently employs 8,000 people and it is worth £290m to the local economy. This (…Liberal Democrat policy) motion would be of huge benefit to those areas hit hard by the 2001 Foot and Mouth Outbreak and where tourism is still recovering."
Sarah Carr spoke in favour of a new Liberal Democrat tourism policy demonstrating her understanding of the tourism industry as an integral part of the local economy. In her speech, Sarah stressed three important issues. Firstly, the need to establish an English Tourist Board to market places such as Herefordshire with appropriate funding, secondly the need to improve public transport including allowing over 60's and disabled people guaranteed free off-peak travel on local buses irrespective of local authority boundaries and thirdly that both Labour and the Conservatives have failed English tourism - that the Government have not provided leadership and that the Conservatives have no robust tourism policy in place.
The tourism policy motion to which Sarah Carr spoke in favour on the main platform was passed by Liberal Democrat conference delegates with an overwhelming majority. The Liberal Democrats are unique in the extent to which party members set policy.
Following the debate Sarah said, "Herefordshire is a county of beautiful natural countryside with distinctive market towns such as Ross-on Wye and our historic cathedral City, Hereford. I am proud to be the parliamentary candidate campaigning on local issues and promoting our county and produce at every opportunity."
