MEMORIAL PLAQUE IN SEARCH OF A HOME - NEWMAN9.00.00am GMT Thu 16th Mar 2006 A plaque erected in memory of the late Councillor George Hyde could be moved yet again. The plaque dedicated to the popular Councillor's memory was originally placed on a small plinth erected at the corner of Eign Gate and Broad Street, but was soon moved to a more prominent position on the wall of nearby card store, Kutz. The relocation of the plaque was carried out in February with a quiet ceremony and the support of Councillor Hyde's family. A contemporary sculpture has been created to sit atop the plinth and it is possible that once this has been installed, Councillor Hyde's plaque will again be moved and placed alongside. Thoughtful Councillor John Newman, who originally called for the plaque to be moved, criticised the council decision to erect it before the Eign Gate regeneration work was completed. He welcomed the relocation of the plaque to its present position. "It is about time it was put in a more prominent place…Why bother putting it up in the first place, if it was only a temporary location?" With the large-scale City Centre redevelopment work still being carried out, it could be some time before the memorial plaque finds a permanent resting place.
