The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity - Preamble to the Liberal Democrat Constitution
Our party is already having a major influence on Government with large parts of our manifesto becoming legislation. Here is some of what we have achieved so far:
"The Lib-Dems have been instrumental in forcing a rethink of controversial NHS reform plans" The Observer 10th April 2011
Over a million low paid workers have been taken out of income tax
Lower income tax bills for over 20 million medium and and low income earners
£4.50 a week pensions increase and the earnings link with pensions restored
Tough new tax on the banks to raise £10 billion
More apprenticeships to get young people into work
Pupil Premium introduced to help poorer pupils
ID cards scrapped
A £900 million crack-down on tax evasion
Our Minister for Equality has been working on legislation which will tackle hate crime more effectively and work towards a more fairer and just society for everyone
After serving as an MEP for almost thirteen years, Liz Lynne has announced that she will stand down in February. A much respected and popular MEP, Liz was paid tributes for her work by Nick Clegg and also at last year's Autumn Regional Conference. Taking her place as MEP will be Phil Bennion.
Phil is a Staffordshire farmer with a PhD in agriculture and has been active within the NFU for nearly fifty years.
We are continuing to hold the Conservative leadership of Herefordshire Council to account. Our team is pushing for an end to the in-fighting within Herefordshire Conservatives that is damaging the County and could wreck the chances of a relief road for Hereford. We are pushing for a better deal to be struck with Council contractors. This would help protect vital public sector jobs.
In his keynote speech to the Liberal Democrat Conference, Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has outlined his goals for the Government and the country over the coming years. He reiterated his commitment to liberal values on the environment and human rights and his determination to ensure a fair chance for every child, saying "every child can do good things, great things, if only we give them the opportunities they deserve."
I visited the new Dunelm Mill store at Holmer Road, and found it crowded with shoppers all enjoying the space, the choice of goods and the set up of the store, tills were ringing merrily.
This is the kind of modern store that people want, but it is of the outskirts of town and all of us had to come by car.
